Minutes, EIPS Mtg, 4/18/2002

Attendees:

Suzanne Keeler, Paul Russell, John Healy, David Zessin, Dr. Mark White, John Clarke, Bob Sanders

Agenda:

A. EIPS Spec, Edits:

1. Remove mention of S4S lumber since this too could contain bark per Dr. White

2. Add copyright statement: Paul will provide suggested text (done)

3. Remove IOPP logo until we get clearance from them to include it: (done)

4. Document Number: "EIPS2000" was applied to the document for reference purposes. Rev 3 will be dated April 18, 2002 (discard copies dated 16APR2002). The edits described here will be included in the 18APR2002 version. (done)

5. Replace "US" with "??" and italicize to reduce potential confusion on exactly what is to be printed. (done)

6. Change Figure 7 to include an actual stamp with data elements identified (done).

7. Delete specific name references in the testing section, include only phone and website information (done)

8. Here is the updated spec per today's discussion (EIPS2000-18APR2002) (See attached file: EIPS2000-18APR2002.pdf)

B. Latest news on IPPC standard (if any): Bob will provide PDF of the final document to Paul for posting on the website. I have not found a URL externally yet. This version was provided as a .DOC file which I converted to PDF.

C. Implementation: Most members will perform a "soft roll", that is use the new spec on all new production. Use up all old pallets until regulations are enforced. OEM's and ODM's will be using it. Goal: Give the same message across the board to all suppliers simultaneously.

Paul will provide details regarding the consulting project to tidy up OEM/ODM guidelines (done). The group agreed that it would be beneficial for all to issue the same direction simultaneously to our respective procurement groups and OEM partners via this process.

D. Trademark issue

E. Open Forum / Next Steps (Time permitting)

1. APHIS is putting together a fumigation compliance program, marking scheme and so on. Meeting is on 4/26 hosted by APHIS. If interested, contact Bill Snell (301-734-8747).

2. (See attached file: KIller Bugs Ohio.pdf) This was my presentation  given in Columbus, Ohio on April 4, 2002 to provide the perspective of a global enterprise to the group of Forest Service people who were getting training to take back to their respective states.

Unfortunately, the PDF does not carry with it the termite animation program that added some levity to the presentation.

Another presentation (Dr. Brian Bond, U. of Tennessee) was given which indicated that steam kilns achieve HT status 3.3 times faster than dry heat kilns without adding to the moisture content of the wood (within 1%).

There is also a company called PSC (Cleveland, OH) that has machinery for treating wood with RF energy. This heats the wood uniformly and very quickly. All energy goes into heating the wood and not heating the air around it first. However, this can only be used for treating boards and lumber prior to assembly since nails and screws cannot be inside the machine during treatment. Thus, this is suited for high volume lumber treating operations.

3. (See attached file: pkg-IPPCfinal.pdf) This is the PDF of the final version of the IPPC standard, ICPM publication 15.

Name at left is my own for filing and web deployment reasons. Paul, please post for convenience.

4. Phone Numbers will change for future meetings. Due to a vacation conflict for myself, the next meeting will be postponed until Thursday, May 23, 2002 at the normal time (11am - noon eastern time).

Thank you for your continued participation and support.

PS: Best wishes to our colleagues at HP and Compaq during their imminent merger.

Regards,

Bob Sanders
